Front Axle Shaft Seal Replacement Right

Tools Required

    • J 45000 Seal Remover
    • J 45187 Differential Output Shaft Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 991028  Size: SH

    Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  1. Position the vehicle on the hoist and raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the transfer drain plug and drain the transaxle.
  3. Remove the front wheel drive shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Drive Line Axle.

  4. Object Number: 945585  Size: SH
  5. Remove the PTU bracket connecting the PTU to the engine.
  6. Remove the PTU bolts.

  7. Object Number: 945606  Size: SH
  8. Remove the PTU.

  9. Object Number: 997779  Size: SH
  10. Using the Seal Remover J 45000 remove the right drive axle seal from the torque converter housing assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 997850  Size: SH
  1. Using the Differential Output Shaft Oil Seal Installer J 45187 , install the right drive axle seal onto the torque converter housing assembly.

  2. Object Number: 945606  Size: SH
  3. Install the PTU onto the transaxle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the PTU bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the PTU retaining bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  7. Install the front wheel drive shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Drive Line Axle.

Front Axle Shaft Seal Replacement Left

    • J 44809 Output Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 45000 Seal Remover

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  1. Remove the front axle shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement removal procedure in Driveline Axle.
  2. Position vehicle on hoist.

  3. Object Number: 991028  Size: SH
  4. Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain transaxle.

  5. Object Number: 997515  Size: SH
  6. Using the Seal Remover J 45000 , remove the axle seal from the transaxle case assembly and discard.
  7. Clean the seal bore in the housing.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 997958  Size: SH
  1. Using the Axle Seal Installer J 44809 , install the left axle seal into the transaxle case assembly.
  2. Install the front axle shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement installation procedure in Driveline Axle.
