Engine Flare During 2-3 Upshift During Pre-Delivery Inspection Road Test

Subject:Engine Flare During 2-3 Upshift During Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) Road Test (Install New TCM Calibration) - Due to revised calibration ID number, this bulletin has been revised and supersedes bulletin 02-T-31, which should be discarded.

Models:2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with V-6 (L81) engines and AF33-5 (RPO M45) automatic transaxles built up to and including VIN 2S812653



Condition

During PDI road test, driver may notice a hesitation or feeling of slippage during a 2nd to 3rd gear upshift and excessive engine flare (300 - 600 RPM) under light to moderate engine load.

Cause

TCM calibration

Correction

Install new TCM calibration. To determine if an updated calibration is required, refer to the following procedure.

Important: Before installing new TCM calibration, make sure the Service Stall System (SSS) version is 10.5 or greater.

Procedure

  1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.
  2. Navigate to the 3.0L (VIN B) Powertrain Menu.
  3. Select ID INFORMATION.
  4. Select TRANSAXLE INFORMATION.
  5. Read CALIBRATION ID.
  6. • If TCM calibration ID number is 9938102319, reprogram the TCM with the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
    • If TCM calibration ID number is not 9938102319, do not reprogram the TCM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required. Refer to "Functional Diagnostic Procedure" in the AF33-5 (M45) section of the 2002 VUE Transaxle Service Manual for further diagnostic information.
