Front Carpet Edge Exposed Near Front Door Hinge Pillar Garnish Molding

Some customers may comment that the carpet edge is becoming exposed at the front door hinge pillar garnish molding.

If the carpet is stepped on near the hinge pillar garnish molding, it may be able to pull out from under the molding. The carpet can be put back under the garnish molding, but it may come out again.

Use the following procedure to install the double-sided tape between the back of the carpet and the main body wiring harness shield.

1. Starting at rear of hinge pillar garnish molding, pull upward to disengage attaching clips.
2. Reach under instrument panel and pull inward to disengage additional attaching clips.
3. Remove garnish molding from vehicle.
4. Cut 4 pieces of 3M® tape 06397, or equivalent, approximately 4 inches (10.2 cm) long.
5. Start removing backing from double side tape to assist in ease of installation.
6. Apply 3M® Adhesive Promoter 06396, or equivalent, to top surface of main body wiring harness shield and on to back side of carpet assembly (the part of the carpet that will come in contact with the main body wiring harness shield when the carpet is reinstalled).

Important: Allow promoter to dry prior to installation of tape.





Important: Place tape on the horizontal surface of the main body wiring harness shield with the outside edge of one of the pieces of tape lined up with the inside edge of the channel in the shield.

7. Apply first 2 pieces of tape so that the front edge of the tape is at the forward edge of the main body wiring harness shield.
8. Apply next 2 pieces of tape so that the rear edge of the tape is lined up with the notch on the main body wiring harness shield just forward of the vehicle cross bar assembly.
9. Remove backing from all 4 pieces of tape.
10. Position carpet into place and apply pressure to areas where tape is located.



11. Rotate hinge pillar garnish molding under instrument panel.
12. Position hinge pillar garnish molding over carpet and space frame.
13. Push at clip locations to secure molding to vehicle.

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for C2010 (Molding, Front Hinge Pillar Garnish, Right - R&R or Replace), or C2011 (Molding, Front Hinge Pillar Garnish, Left - R&R or Replace). (These operations include time to install double-sided tape to retain carpet.)

Important: 3M® double-coated acrylic foam tape and 3M® adhesive promoter is required to perform this repair. Claims received in the amount of Retailer cost plus 40% parts allowance will be accepted for these parts. It will be necessary to sell these parts to the CSO as "Material" using net item code "M". Claims exceeding the amount of $3.26 (cost $2.33 x 1.4 parts allowance) will be returned with return reason 143 - material amount greater than maximum allowed.
