Condition
Some customers may comment on either of the following conditions:
• | Difficult to remove the key from the ignition. |
Cause
GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause for the ignition key not turning to getting stuck in the ignition. Engineering has a need to gather information on vehicles, PRIOR to repair, that may exhibit this condition. Document the following
information on the repair order:
- Describe the customer's concern - be specific.
- Is the vehicle currently exhibiting the customer's concern?
- If the vehicle currently exhibits the customer's concern, complete the following information based on the condition:
Key Can Not Be Removed from the Ignition:
3.1. | Verify the adjustment of the Floor Shift Control Cable. |
3.1.1. | Place the shift lever in Neutral (N). Rotate the selector shaft, at the transmission, clockwise from Park (P) into Neutral (N). |
3.1.2. | With the shift control assembly in Neutral (N), lift up on the cable connector locking clip. |
3.1.3. | Push the clip on the cable connector until it is fully seated and flush with the cable body. |
3.1.4. | Can the key be removed from the ignition? |
Yes -- no further repairs are required. Proceed to step 4.
No -- proceed with step 3.2.
3.2. | Is the lock cylinder damaged? |
3.3. | Is the case worn, damaged or loose? |
Key Won't Turn or Binds:
3.1. | Visually inspect the key and steering column shroud. Does the shroud prevent the key from being fully inserted into the ignition? |
• | Yes -- Reinstall the steering column shroud to prevent key interference. Go to Step 4. |
• | No -- Proceed to step 3.2. |
3.2. | Inspect the key for signs of damage or excessive wear? If damage and/or excessive wear is found, note on the repair order the location on the key, of the wear/damage. |
3.3. | Is the ignition switch assembly damaged? |
3.4. | Disconnect the ignition switch from the housing. Can the key be turned? |
3.5. | Is the lock cylinder housing loose? |
- Contact the engineer to report all findings. The engineer will provide instructions to complete the repair. If the engineer does not answer, leave the following information in a message:
• | Dealer Name, Dealer Code and Phone # |
• | VIN and Repair Order Number |
Important: If the engineer does not return the call within one hour, continue to diagnose and repair the vehicle.
Engineering may need to physically inspect vehicles located within 3 hours of Detroit, MI.
