Chatter And / Or Grind On Acceleration - keywords case transfer

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Customer may comment of a driveline chatter or grind on acceleration. The concern may be described that it feels like slip/stick condition accompanied by a grind. Condition may be worse on rainy or snowy road surfaces.

The concern may be caused by the ring gear not welded to the PTU (Power Take Off Unit) main shaft.

The ring gear is supposed to be both pressed and then welded to the main shaft. Manufacturing concerns may have resulted in the weld being placed in the wrong position.

This condition may be difficult to diagnose. It may be necessary to use electronic chassis ears to isolate the noise to the PTU.

The use of an electronic listening type device should help avoid a mis-diagnosis and unnecessary repairs to the transmission or RDM. After the noise is isolated to the PTU replace the PTU (Power Take Off Unit) assembly as this concern is not repairable in the field.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
