Caution: Coolant from overheated hybrid electronics can cause serious injury, even if the hood is opened just a little. Stay away from the hybrid electronics if coolant is seen or heard coming from them. Just turn off the engine and get everyone away from the vehicle until it cools down. Wait until there is no sign of coolant before opening the hood.
If driving continues when the hybrid electronics are overheated, the vehicle will shut down. Stop the engine if the hybrid electronics overheat, and get out of the vehicle until the hybrid electronics have cooled.Notice: Driving the vehicle when there is no coolant in the coolant surge tank, can badly damage the hybrid electronics. The costly repairs would not be covered by the vehicle warranty.
If there is a SERVICE HYBRID SYSTEM message displayed on the DIC, there could be a coolant overheating problem with the hybrid electronics coolant. The hybrid system will shut the vehicle down if the coolant temperature rises above the hybrid system set calibrated value.
If the SERVICE HYBRID SYSTEM message is displayed, try this:
• | Turn the vehicle off and allow it to cool down for a few minutes. |
• | Open the hood and check the coolant level at the coolant surge tank. Add coolant if low, see Hybrid Coolant. |
• | Turn the vehicle back on and if the SERVICE HYBRID SYSTEM message does not come back, drive normally. |
• | If the SERVICE HYBRID SYSTEM message returns and the vehicle is not stopped, pull over, stop and park the vehicle right away. |
The decision may be made to not lift the hood, but to get service help right away. See Roadside Assistance Program.
