DTC Descriptors

DTC C0460 39: Steering Position Signal

DTC C0460 42: Steering Position Signal Initialization Not Accomplished

DTC C0460 4B: Steering Position Signal Calibration Not Accomplished

DTC C0460 5A: Steering Position Signal Not Plausible

DTC C0460 71: Steering Position Signal Internal Failure

DTC C0460 72: Steering Position Signal Rolling Count Invalid

Circuit/System Description

The steering angle sensor is an input to the EBCM and provides the position of the steering wheel. The EBCM utilizes the signal to calculate when to activate the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES).

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The ignition is ON.
    • Ignition voltage is greater than 9.5 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • Steering angle sensor is reporting an internal electronic failure.
    • Steering angle sensor has not been initialized.
    • Steering angle sensor offset is greater than 15 degrees.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • Vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) are disabled.
    • The VSES indicator illuminates.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present and the DTC is cleared with a scan tool.
    • The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Circuit/System Verification

With the scan tool perform the Steering Angle Sensor Calibration.

Verify the DTC does not reset. If the DTC resets refer to circuit test.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering angle sensor.
  2. Test for less than 5 ohms between the low reference circuit terminal 6 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  4. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If less than the specified value, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
  7. Ignition ON, test for 0 volts between the CAN bus low circuit terminal 4 and ground at the steering angle sensor connector.
  8. If greater than the specified value, test the CAN bus low circuit for a short to voltage.
  9. Test for 0 volts between the CAN bus high circuit terminal 3 and ground.
  10. If greater than the specified value, test the CAN bus high circuit for a short to voltage.
  11. Test for infinite resistance between the CAN bus low circuit terminal 4 and the CAN bus high circuit terminal 3.
  12. If not the specified value, test the CAN bus circuits for a short to together.
  13. If all circuits test normal, replace the steering angle sensor.
