Diagnostic Instructions

Circuit Description

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the traction control indicator during the IPC bulb check or a serial data message when a fault is detected. The BCM supplies voltage to the traction control switch, when pressed the IPC receives a serial data message from the BCM to illuminate the indicator.

Circuit Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the traction control indicator to turn ON then OFF during the IPC bulb test.
  2. With a scan tool command the IPC display test ON and OFF. The traction control indicator should turn ON and OFF.
  3. If the traction control indicator does not turn ON and OFF, replace the IPC.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the traction control switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground terminal 16 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool BCM Traction Control Switch parameter is Inactive.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 5 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
    Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 5 and the ground circuit terminal 16. Verify the scan tool Traction Control Switch parameter is Active.
    If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the traction control switch.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the traction control switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal 5 and the ground terminal 16 with the switch in the open position.
  3. If not the specified value, replace the traction control switch.
  4. Test for less than 3 ohms between the signal terminal 5 and the ground terminal 16 with the switch in the closed position.
  5. If greater than the specified range, replace the traction control switch.

Repair Instructions
