Tools Required

    • J 45053 Universal Clamp Press
    • J 45165 Differential Torque Cross Bar

    Object Number: 783893 Size: SH
  1. Rotate the transmission assembly so that the torque converter housing side is facing up.
  2. Install the front differential assembly (13) into the empty transmission case.

  3. Object Number: 798647 Size: SH
  4. Install the torque converter housing assembly (10) to the transmission case assembly.
  5. Install 7 M8 x 1.25 x 30 mm non coated bolts (1) and hand tighten.
  6. Install 2 M8 x 1.25 x 30 mm bolts (2) and hand tighten.

  7. Object Number: 792756 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Tighten the torque converter housing bolts in sequence.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 23.5-35.3 N·m (17.33-26.00 lb ft).

    Object Number: 784175 Size: SH

Important: When installing J 45053  (2), make sure that the top edge of the differential output spline is slightly below tip of brass inserts.

  10. Install the adjustable jaw portion of J 45053  (2) onto the exposed splined area of the differential assembly and lightly tighten the mounting bolts.
  11. Install J 45165  (1) onto J 45053  (2).
  12. Using a 5/8" socket and torque wrench, measure the rotational torque required to slowly rotate the front differential assembly and note the readings. Refer to Front Differential Gear Assembly, Unloaded Rotating Torque in Transmission Clearance Specifications .
  13. Rotational Torque Specification
Specification should be within 0.70-1.20 N·m (6.195-10.621 lb in).

  14. Compare this measurement with the specification in Transmission Clearance Specifications . If the obtained measurement is within specifications, the differential shim replacement is not necessary.
  15. If obtained measurement is not within the listed specifications, the front differential bearing race shim must be replaced.

  16. Remove J 45165  (1) and J 45053  (2) from the front differential assembly.
  17. Remove the torque converter housing assembly and the front differential assembly from the transmission case.
