GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

This vehicle uses thermal plastic exterior panels. In order for the panels to work to their strategic advantage, thermal expansion of the panels needs to be managed.

Thermal expansion allows exterior panels, such as the fender or door, to grow and contract with changes in temperature. Expansion is controlled through a fastener system and exterior panel design. The panel design consists of a series of net and slotted holes to direct growth. Growth is directed forward for the fender, and rearward for the quarter panels. The growth of the doors is directed forward for the front door, and rearward for the rear door.

(2)Fore/Aft Net (allows up/down growth)

Important: To maintain the functionality of this system, you must use and properly install the correct fasteners.

The fastener design consists of a steel shoulder bolt and a plastic spring washer. This system allows for adequate compression of the joint for panel positioning and retention, yet allows the panel to slide for thermal growth.
