Whistle/Chirp Noise from Engine Compartment (Inspect/Replace Air Cleaner Outlet Duct)

Some customers may comment on an intermittent whistle/chirp noise from the engine compartment. The noise may become more pronounced during high vacuum operating conditions such as deceleration or idle.

Condition may be caused by excessive crankcase vacuum due to a blocked crankcase ventilation hose. Once crankcase vacuum reaches a certain pressure, air may be drawn in past the rear main crankshaft seal in short bursts.

Use the procedure in this bulletin to isolate the noise and replace the fresh air intake duct if the air passage is blocked.

1. Start and idle the engine for several minutes to duplicate whistle/chirp noise.
2. With engine still idling, remove oil level dipstick to relieve any crankcase vacuum.



3. If whistle/chirp noise stops when oil level dipstick is removed, shut off engine. Remove PCV fresh air hose from air cleaner outlet duct and inspect fitting for blockage.

Important: Do not attempt to drill out the blocked passage -- small plastic debris from drilling may become stuck in the duct and may later be ingested by the engine, potentially causing damage.

4. If the fresh air passage blockage is confirmed, replace air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Outlet Resonator/Duct Assembly Replacement -- L61 Removal and Installation procedure in the 2002-2003 Saturn VUE Engine Service Manual.
5. If no blockage is indicated, continue diagnosis with the aid of the Service Manual. Refer to the 2002-2003 Saturn VUE Engine Service Manual for additional diagnosis.
