Harsh Garage Shift, Shift Delay and/or Double Bump

Subject:Harsh Garage Shift, Shift Delay and/or Double Bump (Install New TCM Calibration)

Models:2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4cyl (VIN F - RPO L61) Engine and VT25E Transaxle (RPO M75/M16)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a harsh garage shift, shift delay and/or double bump. The condition occurs most noticeably during a shift from Park to Reverse and/or Drive to Reverse.

Cause

This condition may be caused by pressure variations in the Variable Bleed Solenoid (VBS) signal (line control) fluid circuit.

Correction

Install new TCM calibration. To determine if an updated calibration is required, refer to the following procedure.

Important: Do not reprogram the TCM with a new calibration if the transaxle does not exhibit a harsh garage shift, shift delay or double bump condition. If the TCM is reprogrammed on a vehicle that does not exhibit the condition, the new calibration may adversely affect garage shift quality.

Important: Before installing new TCM calibration, make sure the Service Stall System (SSS) version is Data CD 11 or greater*.

*Saturn Service Stall System software version titled "Saturn SPS Update (October 2002), mailed to retail facilities on October 15, 2002, is required to reprogram the TCM. Subsequent releases of the Saturn SSS will have a different numbering convention that follows the month of release (e.g. Data CD 11 will be released in November and Data CD 12 will be released in December). Any CD release greater than or equal to Data CD 11 will also have the necessary files required to program the TCM. To verify current software version from within TIS2000, select "help," and then "about TIS2000."

Procedure

  1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.
  2. Navigate to the 2.2L (VIN F) Powertrain Menu.
  3. Select ID INFORMATION.
  4. Select TRANSAXLE INFORMATION.
  5. Read CALIBRATION ID.
  6. • If TCM calibration ID number is12224153, 12227003, or 12224143 reprogram the TCM with the update calibration. Refer to table below for correct updated calibration ID number. For reprogramming procedures refer to the "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide.
    • If TCM calibration ID number is not 12224153, 12227003, or 12224143 do not reprogram the TCM with the update calibration. Refer to "Diagnostic Chart - Complaint/Condition Chart (VT25-E)" in the VT25-E (M16/M75) section of the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual for further diagnostic information.
