Powertrain Vibration at Idle with the A/C On and Transmission in Reverse or Drive

Subject:Powertrain Vibration at Idle with the A/C On and Transmission in Reverse or Drive

Models:2002-2003 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder (L61) engine and VTi (M16 or M75) transmission prior to and including VIN 3S812522.



Condition

Some customers may comment about a vehicle vibration under the following conditions:

    • Vehicle is stopped.
    • Transmission is in reverse or drive.
    • Engine is at normal operating temperature
    • Engine is at idle.
    • Vibration is more pronounced when the A/C is On.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the front transmission mount transferring the powertrain vibrations into the spaceframe.

Correction

To correct this condition, replace the front transmission mount with the second design front transmission mount (P/N 21990404) and perform a "Powertrain Mount Balance" by following the service procedure in this bulletin.

Service Procedure


    Object Number: 928767  Size: SH
  1. Confirm customer complaint.
  2. Caution: : Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on the hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle opposite from which components are being removed.

  3. Raise vehicle.
  4. Remove mount-through bolt.

  6. Remove mount to transmission bolts.
  7. Remove mount.

  9. Install second design front transmission mount (PN 21990404) to the transmission.
  10. Install mount to transmission bolts and tighten.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the mount-to-transmission bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  12. Install mount-through bolt, but do not tighten it.
  13. Loosen rear mount-through bolt (do not remove).

  15. Loosen cradle to rear mount bolts (do not remove).
  16. Lower vehicle.
  17. Shake powertrain vigorously (front-to-rear) and allow powertrain to settle.
  18. Caution: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on the hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle opposite from which components are being removed.

  19. Raise vehicle.
  20. Tighten cradle-to-rear mount bolts.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the radle-to-rear mount bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  22. Tighten rear mount-through bolt.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the rear moun-through bolt to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  24. Tighten front mount-through bolt
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the front moun-through bolt to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  26. Lower vehicle.
  27. Verify repair.
