Purpose

This bulletin provides information about installing a new engine control module (ECM) calibration on certain 2002-2003 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61). The revised calibration includes several OBD system improvements that should be installed as soon as practical. Install the new calibration on all affected vehicles identified in this bulletin, including new vehicles in retailer inventory and any vehicles that return for service during the applicable 8-year/80,000 mile emission warranty coverage period. To verify if an updated calibration is required, refer to the following procedure in this bulletin.

Service Procedure

Important: Before installing new ECM calibration, make sure the Service Stall System (SSS) version is TIS 12.0 2003 or greater.

Important: You must view calibration numbers using the TECH 2 Scan Tool and NOT the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS).

  1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.
  2. Navigate to the 2.2L (VIN D) Powertrain Menu.
  3. Select ID INFORMATION.
  4. Select ENGINE INFORMATION.
  5. Read CALIBRATION ID.
  6. • For 2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) with manual transmissions (RPO MG3), determine whether vehicle is equipped with one-speed cooling fan or two-speed cooling fan by checking underhood fuse block (UHFB) for a 20-amp Cool Fan Low Maxi fuse and for a Cool Fan Low Relay. (If fuse and relay are present, vehicle is equipped with two-speed cooling fan.):
       - If vehicle is equipped with two-speed cooling fan and ECM calibration ID number is 12586601 or later, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
       - If vehicle is equipped with two-speed cooling fan and ECM calibration ID number is not 12586601 or later, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
       - If vehicle is equipped with one-speed cooling fan and ECM calibration ID number is 12590642 or later, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
       - If vehicle is equipped with one-speed cooling fan and ECM calibration ID number is not 12590642 or later, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
    • For 2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) with VTi variable transmissions (RPO M16 and M75):
       - If ECM calibration ID number is 12586602 or later, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
       - If ECM calibration ID number is not 12586602 or later, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
    • For 2003 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) with manual transmissions (RPO MG3):
       - If ECM calibration ID number is 12586588 or later, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
       - If ECM calibration ID number is not 12586588 or later, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
    • For 2003 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with 2.2L 4-cylinder engines (RPO L61) with VTi variable transmissions (RPO M16 and M75):
       - If ECM calibration ID number is 12586589 or later, do not reprogram the ECM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
       - If ECM calibration ID number is not 12586589 or later, reprogram the ECM to install the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
