Wind and/or Whistle Noise Coming From the Outside Rearview Mirror (Replace Outside Rearview Mirror Assembly)

Some customers may comment on a wind and/or whistle noise coming from the outside rearview mirror area on front doors.

The mirror housing may not have been returned to the full home position after the folding feature of the mirror was used by the customer, or a gap between the mirror glass housing and the mirror base may allow excessive airflow between these parts.

Replace the outside rearview mirror assembly on the affected door with a new design mirror that incorporates an improved full home location, a tighter mirror housing to base gap, and gaskets between the mirror glass housing and the mirror base. Refer to the service procedure in this bulletin for repair instructions. See the Parts Information section of this bulletin for appropriate mirror assembly part number of new design outside rearview mirror.

1. Verify customer comment by driving vehicle.
2. Move outside rearview mirror forward and backward to make sure mirror housing snaps into full home position.
3. Tape off entire horizontal opening where the mirror glass housing and base come together at the forward split (front of vehicle).
4. Verify noise has gone away by driving vehicle.
5. If no noise is present, proceed to step 6. If noise is still present, refer to Windnoise/Waterleaks/Appearance Diagnosis and Repair in the Body Removal and Installation Service Manual, or other technical service bulletins for further diagnosis.
6. Replace outside rearview mirror on affected door(s). Refer to "Outside Rearview Mirror" Removal and Installation Procedure in the Doors/Windows/Mirrors subsection of the Body Removal & Installation, 2002-2003 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 4.
