Service Information Regarding Timing Belt Coolant Contamination

This bulletin is identical to Saturn bulletin 02-I-07A previously published to U.S. retailers. This bulletin is being issued for electronic reference only and the paper bulletin (02-I-07A) should NOT be discarded.

The timing belt on the V6 engine is susceptible to contamination if an engine coolant leak results in coolant leaking onto the timing belt. If this occurs, the life of the timing belt can be reduced, or could result in the crankshaft and camshaft(s) getting out of time causing the valves to contact the pistons.

Whenever a vehicle is diagnosed to have coolant leaking inside the timing belt cover, a visual inspection of the timing belt should be completed. If there is any indication that coolant has leaked onto the timing belt (i.e. wetness, staining, etc.) the timing belt should be replaced.

When replacing the water pump, coolant will be spilled onto the timing belt. Replacement of the timing belt due to coolant spillage on the belt is not necessary. After removing the water pump, flush the coolant off the belt using fresh water and blow the area out with an air hose before reinstalling the timing belt cover.

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for J0800 (Belt, Camshaft Drive (Timing) Replace), or if another procedure is performed, refer to the appropriate Electronic Labor Time Guide for the correct Labor Operation Code and Time.

Important: When it is necessary to replace the timing belt at the same time the engine coolant leak is repaired, submit labor operation J0800 as a "related line" to the failed labor operation.
