The AM/FM Stereo with Cassette Tape Player and the AM/FM Stereo with Cassette Tape Player and Compact Disc (CD) Player are equipped with a programmable theft deterrent feature intended to discourage theft by causing the player to be inoperable if the theft deterrent feature is activated and power is interrupted between the battery and the radio. Power can be interrupted if the radio is removed from the vehicle, if the battery is disconnected, or if the 10A Radio (BAT) fuse is removed or open.

When you first purchase your vehicle, the theft deterrent feature is active. You must program a four-digit code to activate this feature.

Activating the Theft-Deterrent Feature

To program your personal code or to re-activate the system, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the ignition key to "RUN."
  2. Turn the radio power off.
  3. Press and hold preset buttons 5 and 6 at the same time for 5 seconds. The radio display will show -- -- -- --.
  4. Choose a personal four-digit code that you won't easily forget.
  5. We suggest a number that is familiar to you such as the beginning of your phone number, your birth date, or your address.

  6. Enter your personal four-digit code by using the SEEK/SCAN and TUNE rocker buttons. The numbers will start at "0 0 0 0" and will increase on the display each time the corresponding side of the rocker button is pushed.
  7. • The down arrow side of the SEEK/SCAN rocker button changes the left most digit, while the up arrow side changes the second to left most digit.
    • The third and fourth digits are changed by pressing the TUNE rocker button down and up arrows respectively.
  8. When you finish entering your personal four-digit code, press AM-FM button to store the code.
  9. The display will show "REP" (repeat) requesting that you verify that the code was entered correctly.
  10. Again, enter the same personal four-digit code by using the SEEK/SCAN and TUNE rocker buttons. The numbers will start at "0 0 0 0" and will increase on the display each time the corresponding side of the rocker button is pushed.
  11. • The down arrow side of the SEEK/SCAN rocker button changes the left most digit, while the up arrow side changes the second to left most digit.
    • The third and fourth digits are changed by pressing the TUNE rocker button down and up arrows respectively.
  12. When you finish entering your personal four-digit code, press AM-FM button to store the code.
  13. If you entered everything correctly, the display will indicate that the radio is secure by displaying SEC. The radio will then return to normal operation, but the theft deterrent feature will now be activated.
  14. If yo enter the same number in twice, and do not see SEC displayed, but the radio display shows "Err1", "Err2", or "LOCK", the theft deterrent feature is already set to another code. Proceed with the theft deterrent feature deactivation if deactivation is desired.

Deactivating the Theft Deterrent Feature

To deactivate the system so your retailer can perform service on your vehicle, enter your personal four-digit code using steps 1 through 9 above. After completing those steps, the display will show "OF"F indicating that the radio is in the deactivated mode. When your vehicle is return to you, remember to reactivate the system using steps 1 through 10 above.

If yo do not see the "OFF" confirmation, then the wrong code was entered and you will need to try to enter it again.

Unlocking the Theft-Deterrent Feature After a Power Loss (When You Know Your Four-Digit Code)

When the theft deterrent feature is active or secure (SEC), the radio can enter the locked state if power is removed from the radio for a longer period. If "-- -- -- -"- is shown on the display, you may enter your personal four-digit code by performing steps 4 through 9 from the Activating the Theft Deterrent Feature section. If the proper code is entered, the radio will return to the activated mode and normal operation shall return.

If the wrong code is entered, the display will momentarily show an error message and all radio functions will continue to be disabled. If the radio returns to display "-- -- -- --", you can try to enter your personal four-digit code again if you know it.

If you enter the wrong code three times, "LOCK" will appear on the display. Contact your retailer. Your retailer is authorized to obtain the factory programmed code that is assigned to the radio to reset the system.

Unlocking the Theft Deterrent Feature (If You Do Not Remember Your Four-Digit Code)

If you forget your personal code, if the radio theft deterrent feature is accidentally activated with an unknown number, or if the radio is in the locked mode, contact your retailer. Your Saturn retailer is authorized to obtain the factory programmed code that is assigned to your radio to reset you system.
