Transaxle Shifter Cable Whine Noise

Some customers may comment on a whine noise coming from the shifter area or under the hood.

Transaxle noise is being passed through the shifter cable into the passenger compartment.

Replace shifter cable with current production shifter cable to dampen noise.

1. To properly diagnose source of noise, perform the following:

1.1.	Verify complaint by driving vehicle at speed range noted by customer.

1.2.	Disable SIR system. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable procedure for Frontal and Curtain Inflators" in the "General Information" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.

1.3.	Remove console. Refer to "Console Removal" procedure in the "Shifter" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.

1.4.	Start vehicle.

1.5.	Place your foot on the brake pedal and move the shifter to "D" (Drive).

1.6.	Remove shifter cable retainer clip and remove cable from control assembly. Discard clip.

1.7.	Drive vehicle at speed range noted by customer and evaluate whether the noise identified in step 1.1 (above) has been eliminated.

-	a. If the noise has been eliminated, proceed to step 2.

-	b. If the noise has NOT been eliminated, perform the following:

•	Install shifter cable onto control assembly. Secure with a new shifter cable retainer clip.

•	Install console. Refer to "Console Installation" procedure in the "Shifter" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.

•	Enable SIR system. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable procedure for Frontal and Curtain Inflators" in the "General Information" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.

•	If the shifter cable is not the source of the noise, verify complaint with customer. Refer to the "Functional Diagnostic Procedure Chart" located in the 2002-2003 Transaxle Service Manual to re-diagnose the source of the noise.

2. Remove the shifter cable assembly. Refer to the "Control Cable Assembly" procedure in the "Shifter" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.
3. Install new shifter cable (P/N 22704377). Refer to the "Control Cable Assembly" installation procedure in the "Shifter" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.
4. Enable SIR system. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable procedure for Frontal and Curtain Inflators" in the "General Information" section located in the 2002-2003 VUE Transaxle Service Manual.
5. Verify noise complaint is eliminated by test driving vehicle.
