    • J 44015 Tie Rod Installer
    • SA91100C Tie Rod Separator

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the front tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 854976  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the location of the jam nut for installation.

  4. Loosen the tie rod inner jam nut.

  5. Object Number: 854972  Size: SH

    Important: Hold the ball stud to prevent turning during removal of the nut.

  6. Remove the tie rod to knuckle nut. Discard the nut.

  7. Object Number: 854983  Size: SH

    Notice: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  8. Use the SA91100C to separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.

  9. Object Number: 854987  Size: SH
  10. Remove the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 854987  Size: SH
  1. Install the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod.

  2. Object Number: 891579  Size: SH
  3. Connect the tie rod to the knuckle.
  4. Use the J 44015 to seat the ball stud taper to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
  5. Remove the J 44015 .
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 854972  Size: SH
  7. install a new tie rod retention nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 25 N·m+90 degrees (18 lb ft)+90 degrees.

  9. Install the front tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  10. Check the wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
