Removal Procedure

  1. Place the steering wheel in the straight forward position.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  4. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
  5. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Steering Column Opening Filler Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  6. Object Number: 928844  Size: SH
  7. Remove the steering column upper mounting bolts.

  8. Object Number: 928861  Size: SH
  9. Remove the steering column rear pivot bolt.
  10. Important: Do not remove the steering column to intermediate shaft pinch bolt.

  11. Support the lower column as necessary.

  12. Object Number: 931226  Size: SH
  13. Remove the jacket attaching bolts and remove the upper jacket from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

  1. Clean the column shaft splines.
  2. Use the supplied grease to apply 2 grams (0.07 oz) of grease to the column shaft splines.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 931226  Size: SH
  4. Install the new jacket on the steering column.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).


    Object Number: 928844  Size: SH
  6. Hand tighten the upper column mounting bolts.

  7. Object Number: 928861  Size: SH
  8. Install the lower column-through bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).


    Object Number: 928844  Size: SH
  10. Tighten the upper column mounting bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in)

  12. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Steering Column Opening Filler Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  13. Install the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
  14. Install the steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  15. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  16. Road test the vehicle. Verify proper steering operation.
