Preliminary Procedures

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the front tire/wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

Outer Tie Rod Castle Nut

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Procedure

Prior to installing the castle nut, use the J 44015 to seat the ball stud taper. The installer should be tightened to 40 N·m (30 lb ft) and then removed.

Tighten
25 N·m (18 lb ft) + 90 degrees

Outer Tie Rod Jam Nut

Tip
To keep toe alignment in approximate location, mark the location of the jam nut on the inner tie rod prior to removal.

Tighten
60 N·m (44 lb ft)

Outer Tie Rod

Procedure

  1. Use the SA91100C , to separate the outer tie rod ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  2. Inspect the inner tie rod for bent or damaged threads.
  3. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle.
  4. Lubricate the tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
  5. Count the number of turns during removal to aid installation.
  6. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .

Tip
Do not free the ball stud from the steering knuckle by use of a pickle fork or a wedge type tool.
