Removal Procedure
Notice: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured
in position before disconnecting the following components:
After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.
- Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position, support it from movement.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
Important: Secure the steering wheel in the straight forward position before separating the intermediate shaft from the steering gear, or damage to the SIR coil will occur.
- Remove the intermediate to steering gear pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
- Remove the instrument panel left insulator panel. Refer to
Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side
.
- Disengage the intermediate shaft seal from the body panel.
- Collapse the intermediate steering shaft, while disconnecting the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
- Place scribe marks on the intermediate shaft to the steering column connection prior to removal, this will be an aid during installation.
- Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the steering column. Discard the pinch bolt.
- Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft assembly from inside the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
Important: Failure to transfer the pre-scribed marks may result in an off-center steering wheel.
- If a new intermediate shaft is being installed, transfer the pre-scribed alignment marks on to the new part.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft assembly from inside the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Align and connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear and install a new lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
- Align the pre-scribed mark on the intermediate steering shaft to the pre-scribed mark on the steering column.
- Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column and install the pinch bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
- Seat the intermediate shaft seal into the body panel.
- Install the instrument panel left insulator panel. Refer to
Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side
.
- Lower the vehicle.
