Circuit Description

The seat heater mat which is a part of the heated seat system is calibrated as a part of the inflatable restraint Passenger Presence System (PPS). If the vehicle is equipped with a front passenger seat heater, the PPS continuously monitors for faults from the heated seat element. If the PPS determines there is a fault in the heated seat element supply circuit, the PPS will set DTC 052, turn the passenger air bag status indicator to OFF, and notify the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) of a fault in the PPS through a non class 2 communications circuit. The SDM will then turn the air bag indicator to ON, and set DTC B0092 indicating a problem within the PPS and will suppress the deployment of the instrument panel (I/P) module. The heater seat mat along with the PPS is a calibrated system and must be replaced as a complete unit

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC 052 Heated Seat Ground Fault

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The PPS has detected the heated seat element supply circuit voltage out of range.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PPS will set a DTC 052, then communicate with the SDM via non class 2 circuit.
    • The SDM will set DTC B0092.
    • The SDM disables the I/P module deployment loop.
    • The PPS will turn ON the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
    • The SDM commands the AIR BAG indicator ON via class 2 serial data.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
    • You issue a scan tool CLEAR DTCs command.
    • A history DTC will clear once 255 malfunction free ignition cycles have occurred.

Diagnostic Aids

If there is a fault in the passenger heated seat element supply circuit, the entire PPS system must be replaced.

Test Description

The number below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Test the heated seat element supply circuit for voltage.

  2. Test the heated seat element supply circuit for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Operate the passenger heated seat. Refer to Heated Seats Description and Operation .

Does the passenger heated seat operate as describe in the heated seat description and operation?

Go to Step 3

Go to Heated Seat Inoperative

3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Passenger Presence System (PPS) module connector. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.
  3. Inspect the PPS module terminals and harness connector for damage or corrosion.

Does the PPS module terminals or harness connector exhibit any signs of damage or corrosion?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

4

  1. If the PPS module terminals are damaged, replace the PPS. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.
  2. If the PPS harness connector is damaged, replace the connector. Refer to Connector Repairs .

5

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the passenger heated seat.
  3. On the PPS harness connector test between the heated seat element supply circuit and a good ground.

Does the heated seat element supply circuit indicate any voltage?

Go to Step 8

Go to Step 6

6

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Check to see if the fuse that supplies voltage passenger heated seat is not open. If fuse is found to be OK then proceed to next step.
  3. Test the heated seat element supply circuit for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 9

Go to Step 7

7

  1. Reconnect all SIR and PPS system components.
  2. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  3. Cycle the ignition OFF then back ON, with the engine OFF.

Does DTC 052 reset?
