The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the "Change Engine Oil Indicator" is inoperative. This is only a concern with the LE5 4 cylinder engines. During diagnosis using the Tech2, the "Engine Oil Life Remaining" will display (0%) in the ECM and IPC, and the "Change Engine Oil Indicator Command" will display (Yes) but the light is not on. Some customer may receive a message from Onstar recommending the customer to have their oil changed, but the "Change Engine Oil Indicator" has never come on.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Do not replace any parts to try to repair this concern at this time. Engineering is aware of the concern and is looking into a fix. This PI will be update when new information becomes available.

Until the resolution is defined, owners should be advised to either:

  1. Change the oil on a fixed mileage schedule based upon service - 3000 Miles for severe service (dusty area or in a high humidity) or 7500 Miles with light service.
  2. Enroll in the On-Star Diagnostic Email which includes oil life remaining - schedule oil change when advised.
  3. Review oil life remaining via Tech 2 (IPC Data within Powertrain) - change oil if in the range 0 - 5%.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
