DTC Descriptor

DTC P0762: Shift Solenoid (SS) 3 Valve Performance - Stuck On

Circuit/System Description

The transmission control module (TCM) controls the 1-2, 2-3, reverse shift solenoid valve with an internal driver that pulls the solenoid control circuit to high.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • No Throttle Position (TP) Sensor DTC P0120
    • No Transmission Range (TR) Switch DTC’s P0706, P0707, or P0708
    • No Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor DTC’s P0711, P0712, or P0713
    • No Speed Sensor DTC’s P0717, P0722, P0727
    • No Pressure Control (PC) Solenoid DTC’s P0962, P0963, P0966, P0967, P0970, or P0971
    • No Shift Solenoid (SS) Control Circuit DTC’s P0973, P0974, P0976, P0977, P0979, P0980, P0982, P0983, P0985, or P0986
    • No Transmission Torque Delivered Circuit DTC P2637
    • No Communications DTC’s U0100 or U2104
    • Output speed greater than one half that of the input speed
    • Input speed is greater than 400 RPM
    • Transmission fluid temperature (TFT) is greater than 20°C
    • Engine speed is greater than 400 RPM
    • Throttle position greater than 10%
    • Shift range equals D, M, or L for at least 2 seconds
    • Ignition voltage is greater than 10.5 volts

Conditions for Setting the DTC

4th gear commanded and the current ratio is within 1.87:1 - 2.02:1 for 12 seconds or 5th gear commanded and the current ratio is within 1.44:1 - 1.56:1 for 12 seconds

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

  1. The transmission will operate in 3rd gear in D or M range
  2. Limit engine torque to 150 N·m

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0762 is a Type A DTC

Diagnostic Aids

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool.
  2. Record Freeze Frame and Failure Records.
  3. Clear DTC’s.
  4. Operate the vehicle under the conditions observed in the Failure Records.
  5. Observe the DTC information with the scan tool. Verify that the DTC does not set.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Using a scan tool, command shift solenoid 3 ON and OFF. The solenoid should click when commanded.
  2. If the solenoid does not click, replace the 1-2, 2-3, reverse shift solenoid valve assembly. Refer to Control Valve Body Assembly Disassemble .
  3. Perform a line pressure test. Refer to Line Pressure Check procedure.
  4. Remove the Control valve body cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Removal procedure.
  5. Inspect the inside of the control valve body cover for excessive sediment. There should not be excessive sediment.
  6. If excessive sediment is found inspect and replace as necessary the 4-5 clutch, and the second clutch. Refer to 4-5 Clutch Drum Assembly Assemble and 2nd Clutch Assemble procedures. If all conditions test normal, test or replace the transmission.
  7. Inspect the control valve body assembly for the following conditions. The conditions should not be found.
  8. •  Torn or missing 1-2, 2-3, reverse shift solenoid valve assembly O-ring seal
    • Stuck U2 shift valve
    • Refer to Control Valve Rear Body Disassemble .
If any of the above conditions are found, repair or replace the valve body assembly. Refer to Control Valve Body Replacement procedure. If all circuits and components test normal, replace the transmission.
  9. Verify that the control valve body has been serviced within the past 3 months.
  10. If the control valve body has not been serviced, test or replace the control valve body assembly. Refer to Control Valve Body Replacement procedure
If all circuits and components test normal, replace the transmission.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
