Assembly Procedure

J 42640 Centering Sphere Installer Tool


    Object Number: 299877  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly once the steering column support assembly has been staked more than 3 times.

  1. Install the steering column support assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (3).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install 4 TORX® screws (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) using the J 42640 . Lubricate the centering sphere (1) with lithium grease.

  6. Object Number: 299881  Size: SH
  7. Compress the centering sphere and the joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.

  8. Object Number: 299885  Size: SH
  9. Install the race and upper shaft assembly to the J 42640 . Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees.

  10. Object Number: 299887  Size: SH
  11. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly using the J 42640 . Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees from the J 42640 and remove with the centering sphere.

  12. Object Number: 299888  Size: SH
  13. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly (1). Install the lower shaft assembly (2).

  14. Object Number: 299889  Size: SH
  15. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  16. Object Number: 306326  Size: SH
  17. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (4).
  18. Stake the pivot pin locations (2).
  19. Install 2 pivot pins (3).

  20. Object Number: 324925  Size: SH
  21. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
  22. Install the lower bearing seat (2).
  23. Install the lower bearing spring (3).
  24. Install the lower spring retainer (4).
  25. Install the sensor retainer (5).
  26. Install the steering shaft seal (6).

  27. Object Number: 324921  Size: SH
  28. Install 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws.
  29. Important: The linear shift assembly must be out of the PARK position in order to install the lower socket tapping screw.

  30. Install the linear shift assembly.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  32. Install the electrical brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) actuator.
  33. Install the gear shift lever. Put the column in the NEUTRAL position.

  35. Adjust the electrical BTSI actuator by performing the following steps:
  36. 22.1. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the electrical BTSI actuator.
    22.2. Press on the adjuster block (2) in order to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away as possible from the solenoid.
    22.3. Lock in place by pushing the tab (2) back in.
  37. Inspect the electrical BTSI actuator by performing the following steps:
  38. 23.1. The electrical BTSI actuator must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the PARK position.
    23.2. When the column is installed in the vehicle, you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the PARK position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized.
    23.3. Readjust if needed.

  39. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  40. Install the 2 pan head tapping screws.
  41. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  42. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  43. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
