J 26234 Drive Axle Seal Installer

  1. Install the inner pinion bearing outer races to the housing if removed.
  2. Install the outer pinion bearing outer races to the housing if removed.
  3. Install the differential drive pinion gear inner bearing to the differential drive pinion gear.
  4. Install the differential drive pinion seal to the differential.
  5. Measure the side bearing preload. Refer to Side Bearing Preload Inspection and Adjustment .
  6. Install the differential carrier.
  7. Establish the pinion gear depth. Refer to Pinion Depth Adjustment .
  8. Install the drive pinion to the rear axle housing. Refer to Drive Pinion Assemble .
  9. Install the differential carrier.
  10. Important: Use snap rings of the proper thickness as determined in Side Bearing Preload Inspection and Adjustment to reassemble.

  11. Check and correct if necessary the backlash. Refer to Backlash Inspection and Adjustment .

  12. Object Number: 218672  Size: SH
  13. Use the J 26234 to install the drive axle seals (1) to the bearing cups.
  14. Install the rear axle housing cover.

  15. Object Number: 218644  Size: SH
  16. Install the rear axle housing cover bolts (1).
  17. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the rear axle housing cover bolts (1) to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  18. Remove the J 42177 from the differential.
