  1. Assemble and install the drive pinion to the rear axle housing. Refer to Drive Pinion Assemble .
  2. Install the differential drive pinion seal (1) to the differential.
  3. Measure the side bearing preload. Refer to Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment .
  4. Install the differential carrier to the housing.
  5. Establish the pinion gear depth. Refer to Pinion Depth Adjustment .
  6. Inspect the backlash. Refer to Backlash Adjustment .

  7. Object Number: 218672  Size: SH
  8. Use the J 26234 in order to install the drive axle seals (1) to the housing.
  9. Install the rear axle housing cover.

  10. Object Number: 218644  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the rear axle housing cover bolts (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the rear axle housing cover bolts (1) to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).
