Servicing Quick Connect Fittings Metal Collar

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 37088-A Tool Set, Fuel Line Quick-Connect Separator

Important: Relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing any fuel system connection. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .

  2. Object Number: 12775  Size: SH
  3. Grasp both sides of the fitting. Twist the female connector ¼ turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting.

  4. Object Number: 12776  Size: SH

    Caution: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

  5. Blow dirt out of the fitting using compressed air.

  6. Object Number: 12780  Size: SH
  7. Choose the correct tool from J 37088-A Tool Set for the size of the fitting. Insert the tool into the female connector, then push inward to release the locking tabs.

  8. Object Number: 12782  Size: SH
  9. Pull the connection apart.
  10. Notice: If necessary, remove rust or burrs from the fuel pipes with an emery cloth. Use a radial motion with the fuel pipe end in order to prevent damage to the O-ring sealing surface. Use a clean shop towel in order to wipe off the male tube ends. Inspect all the connections for dirt and burrs. Clean or replace the components and assemblies as required.

  11. Using a clean shop towel, wipe off the male pipe end.
  12. Inspect both ends of the fitting for dirt and burrs. Clean or replace the components as required.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: In order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, before connecting fuel pipe fittings, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe ends.

    This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak.

    During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated.

  1. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe end.

  2. Object Number: 12786  Size: SH
  3. Push both sides of the fitting together to cause the retaining tabs to snap into place.

  4. Object Number: 12787  Size: SH
  5. Once installed, pull on both sides of the fitting to make sure the connection is secure.

Removal Procedure

Caution: Relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury.

After relieving the system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines or connections. In order to reduce the chance of personal injury, cover the regulator and the fuel line fittings with a shop towel before disconnecting. This will catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the disconnection is complete.

Caution: Place a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby before performing any on-vehicle service procedures. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .

  2. Object Number: 157703  Size: SH
  3. Grasp both sides of the quick-connect fitting. Twist quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within fitting.
  4. Repeat for other fuel pipe fitting.
  5. Caution: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air in order to prevent eye injury.

  6. Blow out dirt from quick-connect fittings at both ends, using compressed air.

  7. Object Number: 12777  Size: SH
  8. Squeeze plastic tabs of male end connector.

  9. Object Number: 12778  Size: SH
  10. Pull connection apart.
  11. Repeat for the other fitting.

  12. Wipe off the male pipe end using a clean shop towel.
  13. Clean or replace components/assemblies as required.

  3. Push both sides of the quick-connect fitting together in order to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to make sure snap into place.

  4. Object Number: 155399  Size: SH
  5. Pull on both sides of the quick connect fitting in order to make sure the connection is secure.

Removal Procedure

Caution: Relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury.

  1. Blow any dirt out of the quick connect fitting, using compressed air.

  2. Object Number: 12777  Size: SH
  3. Squeeze the retainer tabs. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .

  4. Object Number: 12778  Size: SH
  5. Pull the connection apart.
  6. Remove the retainer.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the new plastic retainer.

  3. Object Number: 21855  Size: SH
  4. Push both sides of the quick-connect fitting together in order to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.

  5. Object Number: 155399  Size: SH
  6. Once installed, pull on both sides of the quick-connect fitting in order to make sure the connection is secure.
