Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 28509-A Sprocket Remover

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

  3. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls-7.4L
  4. Remove the grille from the vehicle.

  5. Object Number: 72749  Size: SH
  6. Remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  7. Object Number: 199015  Size: SH
  8. Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC System-Manual.

  9. Object Number: 64529  Size: SH
  10. Remove the upper intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  11. Object Number: 64532  Size: SH
  12. Remove the lower intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  14. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  16. Remove the valve rocker arms from the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  18. Remove the valve push rods from the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  20. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  22. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  24. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  26. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  27. Remove the crankshaft position reluctor ring from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .

  28. Object Number: 65453  Size: SH
  29. Remove the timing chain and the sprockets from the engine block. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  30. Object Number: 65848  Size: SH
  31. Use the J 28509-A in order to remove the crankshaft sprocket.

  32. Object Number: 193223  Size: SH
  33. Remove the camshaft retainer bolt and the retainer from the engine block.
  34. Remove the camshaft retainer.

  35. Object Number: 196588  Size: SH
  36. Install 3 5/16 18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into the camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use the bolts has a handle for the camshaft removal.

  37. Object Number: 66262  Size: SH
  38. Pull the camshaft from the engine block. Use care as not to damage the camshaft bearing.
  39. Remove the 3 5/16 18 bolts from the camshaft.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22101 Seal Installer

  1. Install the 3 5/16 18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into the camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use these bolts has a handle for the camshaft installation.
  2. Coat the camshaft lobes and the journals with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 before installing the camshaft into the cylinder block.

  4. Install the camshaft into the engine block.
  5. Remove the three 5/16 18 bolts from the camshaft.

  6. Object Number: 193223  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the camshaft retainer and bolts in the engine block.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  9. Use the J 22101 in order to install the crankshaft sprocket.

  10. Object Number: 65453  Size: SH
  11. Install the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket to the camshaft.
  12. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts to the camshaft.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  14. Install the crankshaft position reluctor ring on the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .

  16. Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  17. Object Number: 66263  Size: SH
  18. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  20. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  21. Object Number: 173176  Size: SH
  22. Install the valve lifters to the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  23. Object Number: 172998  Size: SH
  24. Install the push rods into the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  25. Object Number: 64537  Size: SH
  26. Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  27. Object Number: 64532  Size: SH
  28. Install the lower intake manifold to the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  29. Object Number: 64529  Size: SH
  30. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  31. Object Number: 64534  Size: SH
  32. Install the valve rocker arm covers to the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  33. Object Number: 72749  Size: SH
  34. Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement .

  35. Object Number: 199015  Size: SH
  36. Install the air conditioning condenser to the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC System-Manual.
  37. Install the grille on the vehicle.

  39. Install the air cleaner duct to the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls-7.4L
  40. Connect the battery negative cables.
