Removal Procedure

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Important: The engine front cover gasket is reusable. Replace only if gasket is damaged.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling inEngine Cooling.

  4. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover (2). Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 64551  Size: SH
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 66263  Size: SH
  8. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  10. Object Number: 173182  Size: SH
  11. Remove the bolts from the front of the oil pan, and loosen the rear bolts to allow the oil pan to hang from the engine block. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  12. Remove the engine front cover mounting bolts.

  13. Object Number: 64547  Size: SH
  14. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
  15. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal.

Installation Procedure

Important: The engine front cover gasket is reusable. Replace only if gasket is damaged.

    Important: The front cover must be installed and the fasteners tightened while the sealant is still wet to the touch.

  1. Apply the sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent in two sealant points on the front cover where the front cover meets the oil pan.

  2. Object Number: 64547  Size: SH
  3. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the engine front cover bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  7. Install the crankshaft front cover oil seal to the engine front cover.

  9. Install the oil pan to the engine block. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  10. Lower the vehicle.

  12. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover (2). Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement .

  13. Object Number: 66720  Size: SH
  14. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  16. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
