Problem

Action

The column is not aligned correctly.

  1. Check the following:
  2. • Check the column alignment.
    • Check the mounting.
    • Check the bearings.
  3. Adjust, repair and/or replace as needed.
  4. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

The horn contact ring (in tilt head) is not lubricated.

Inspect the horn contact ring and service if necessary.

Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement .

The joints from the column to the steering gear are loose.

  1. Check for correct torque.
  2. Replace components as needed.

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

A lack of grease on the upper and lower bearings.

Inspect the upper and lower bearings for grease. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The lower or upper bearings are worn or broken.

Inspect the upper and lower bearings for wear. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

The shaft lock retaining ring is not seated.

Inspect and discard the shaft lock retaining ring if necessary. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement .

The spherical joint is not lubricated.

Inspect the spherical joint for grease. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
