Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint system (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Supplemental Inflatable Restraints.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  5. Securely mount the steering column in a soft-jawed vise.

  7. Use the following method in order to remove the ignition switch mounting bolts (1).
  8. 5.1. Use a hammer and a chisel in order to create slots on the top of the mounting bolts (1).
    5.2. Use a screwdriver in order to remove the mounting bolts (1).
  9. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON position or the ACC position.
  10. Remove the switch from the steering column.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 355231  Size: SH
  1. Position the oblong hole (3) in the steering shaft (2) so that the hole (3) is visible through and in the center of the hole (4) in the steering column.
  2. Install the ignition switch to the column. Ensure that the ignition key is still in either the ON position or the ACC position.
  3. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
  4. Remove the key from the ignition switch.

  5. Object Number: 355234  Size: SH
  6. Align the ignition switch hub (2) with the oblong hole (3) in the steering shaft.
  7. Rotate the shaft in order to ensure that the steering shaft locks.

  8. Object Number: 355242  Size: SH
  9. Install the 2 new breakaway head bolts (1) to the ignition switch (2). Tighten the breakaway head bolts until the heads break off.
  10. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position or the ON position.
  11. Ensure that the shaft rotates smoothly.
  12. Inspect the lock for proper operation.
  13. Remove the steering column from the vise.
  14. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
