Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Pull out the instrument panel compartment (5) while pushing the stopper from both the left and the right sides.
  5. Remove the instrument panel compartment (5) by removing 2 screws.
  6. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM):
  7. 5.1. Remove 3 bolts.
    5.2. Disconnect 3 electrical connectors.

  8. For vehicles with manual transaxle, remove the gearshift control lever upper boot (2) from the console (3).
  9. Remove the console (3) from the vehicle by removing 6 screws.
  10. Remove the IP center trim bezel. Refer to Instrument Panel Center Trim Panel Replacement .

  12. Remove the cup holder (8) by removing 2 screws.

  13. Object Number: 352120  Size: MH
  14. Remove the radio:
  15. 10.1. Remove 5 screws (1).
    10.2. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  16. Remove the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C) or Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  17. Separate the hood latch release handle by removing 2 screws.
  18. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard.
  19. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  20. Remove the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  21. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the right side of the instrument panel:
  22. • The A/C amplifier (if equipped)
    • The A/C amplifier thermistor (if equipped)
    • The blower motor and the blower motor resistor
    • The connector C205
    • The dome light
    • The door speaker (if equipped)
  23. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the left side of the instrument panel:
  24. • The door speaker (if equipped)
    • The junction block electrical connectors
    • The main harness electrical connector (C200)
  25. Remove the antenna cable hold down loops.
  26. Unclip and remove the left and the right windshield side garnish moldings.

  28. Remove the following 7 bolts (2) that secure the instrument panel center brace (3):
  29. • 2 bolts located on each door jam area
    • 2 bolts located at the bottom center of the instrument panel near the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM)
    • 1 bolt near the steering column mounting area
  30. Remove the following components:
  31. • 1 cover
    • 1 screw (2)
    • The upper center of the instrument panel
  32. Remove the following components:
  33. • 2 screws
    • The lower left and the right corners of the instrument panel (1)
  34. Remove the instrument panel (1) from the vehicle.
  35. Transfer parts from the instrument panel (1) as necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the instrument panel (1) in the vehicle. Secure the instrument panel with the 3 screws.
  2. Replace the upper center cover.
  3. Install the instrument panel center brace (3). Secure the center brace with the 7 bolts (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the IP center brace bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the left and the right windshield side garnish moldings.
  6. Install the antenna cable through the hold down loops.
  7. Connect all of the instrument panel electrical connectors.
  8. Install the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  9. Install the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

  11. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard.
  12. Install the hood latch release handle. Secure the hood latch release handle with the 2 screws.
  13. Install the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C) or Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  14. Connect the 2 radio electrical connectors.
  15. Install the radio to the instrument panel. Secure the radio with the 5 screws (1).

  17. Install the cup holder (8). Secure the cup holder with the 2 screws.

  18. Object Number: 352116  Size: SH
  19. Connect the cigar lighter electrical connector.
  20. Install the center console trim bezel (3). Secure the trim bezel with the 4 screws (1).

  21. Object Number: 352453  Size: MH
  22. Install the console (3). Secure the console with the 6 screws.
  23. For vehicles with a manual transaxle, install the gearshift control lever upper boot (2) to the console (3).
  24. Connect 3 PCM electrical connectors to the PCM.
  25. Install the PCM to the vehicle. Secure the PCM with the 3 bolts.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the powertrain control module bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  27. Install the instrument panel compartment (5). Secure the instrument panel compartment with the 2 screws.
  28. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
