Battery Cable Replacement Positive 3100

Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

   • Air bag deployment
   • Personal injury
   • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
   • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
   • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

When you replace the battery cables, use replacement cables that are the same type, gauge and length.

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  4. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.
  5. Remove the remote positive stud cover.
  6. Remove the positive battery cable junction block lead nut and the positive battery cable from the underhood accessory wiring junction block.

  8. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  9. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut and the positive battery cable (9) from the starter solenoid BAT terminal.
  10. Remove the battery cable retainers from the lower radiator support.
  11. Remove the positive battery cable from the wiring harness conduit.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery positive cable into the wiring harness conduit.
  2. Install the battery cable retainers to the lower radiator support.
  3. Install the positive battery cable (9) to the starter motor BAT terminal.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the solenoid BAT terminal nut (8).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (8) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Lower the vehicle.

  9. Install the positive battery cable and positive battery cable junction block lead nut to the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable junction block lead nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Install the remote positive stud cover.
  12. Install the positive battery cable to the battery.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  14. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  16. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

Battery Cable Replacement Positive 3800

Removal Procedure

  10. Remove the battery cable retainers from the lower radiator support.
  11. Remove the positive battery cable from the wiring harness conduit.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the positive battery cable into the wiring harness conduit.
  2. Install the battery cable retainers to the lower radiator support.
  3. Install the positive battery cable (7) to the starter solenoid BAT terminal.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   5. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (6) to 10 N·m (84 lb in).

  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the positive battery cable and positive battery cable junction block lead nut to the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable junction block lead nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  10. Install the remote positive stud cover.

  12. Install the positive battery cable to the battery.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  14. Connect the negative battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  16. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.

Battery Cable Replacement Ground 3100

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

  7. Remove the transaxle stud nut (3) and the negative battery cable (4) from the transaxle stud.
  8. Remove the battery cable retainers from the lower radiator support.
  9. Remove the negative battery cable from the wiring harness conduit.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the negative battery cable into the wiring harness conduit.
  2. Install the battery cable retainers to the lower radiator support.

    Tighten the transaxle stud nut (3) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  6. Lower the vehicle.

  8. Install the negative battery cable bolt and the cable to the upper tie bar.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable screw to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  10. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  12. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
