Are all of the speakers inoperative?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the radio connectors C1 and C2.
  3. Measure the resistance with the DMM.
  4. Probe the radio connectors between the speaker feed (+) and the speaker return (-) circuits of each speaker.

Is the resistance within the specified value for each speaker?

2-4ohms

Go to Step 9

Inspect all of the speaker feed (+) circuits for a short to ground.

Is there a short to ground in any of the speaker feed (+) circuits?

Check for short to ground in all of the speaker return (-) circuits.

Is there a short to ground in any of the speaker return (-) circuits?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACCY position.
  2. Turn the radio on.
  3. Insert the cassette or the compact disc from the J 39916-A into the radio.
  4. Set the radio balance and fade controls to the detent (center) position.
  5. Set the radio volume at a normal listening level.
  6. Complete the following actions simultaneously:
  7. • Play the combination test tone from the cassette or the compact disc.
    • Use a DMM in order to backprobe between terminals A and B of the inoperative speaker harness connector.

Does the voltage vary above the specified value?

3V

Check for continuity in the speaker feed (+) circuit between the radio and the inoperative speaker.

Is there continuity in the speaker feed circuit?

Repair a short to ground in the affected speaker feed (+) circuits.

Is the repair complete?

Repair a short to ground in the affected speaker return (-) circuits.

Service the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement for service procedure.
