Go to Starting System Check

1. Inspect the battery hydrometer. Refer to Battery Hydrometer Displays Dark or Yellow Dot as needed.
2. Remove the appropriate fuse(s) from the IP fuse block to prevent the engine from starting:

•	Buick: INJ fuse.

•	Oldsmobile: INJ 1 and INJ 2 fuses.

3. Place the ignition switch in START for 15 seconds.
4. Using a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM), measure the voltage between the battery terminals.

Is the measured voltage greater than the specified value?

8 V

Go to Step  3

Go to Step 6

Using a DMM, measure the voltage between the negative battery terminal and the engine block while the ignition switch is placed in START for 15 seconds.

Is the measured voltage less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 8

Using a DMM, measure the voltage between the positive battery terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B while the ignition switch is placed in START for 15 seconds.

Is the measured voltage less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 9

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 11

Perform the parasitic load test. Refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load Test .

Is the battery OK?

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 10

1. Check the battery and starter motor terminals for corrosion or poor contact.
2. If OK, replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

--

Go to Step 11

1. Clean the negative battery cable connections and repeat the test.
2. If the measured voltage is still greater than the specified value, replace the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable .

Is the repair complete?

0.5 V

Go to Step 11

1. Clean the positive battery cable connections and repeat the test.
2. If the measured voltage is still greater than the specified value, replace the positive battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable .

Is the repair complete?

0.5 V

Go to Step 11

Replace the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 11

--

1. Make sure any components removed during diagnosis are installed in place and that all connectors are connected.
2. Repeat the system check. Refer to Starting System Check .

Is the system check complete?
