  1. Place gear selector in the PARK position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Observe the SECURITY indicator.

  1. Remove the appropriate injector fuse(s) from the I/P fuse block to prevent the engine from starting:
  2. • Buick: INJ fuse.
    • Oldsmobile: INJ 1 fuse and INJ 2 fuse.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  4. Using a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM), measure the voltage from the starter solenoid terminal S to ground.

Is the measured voltage greater than the specified value?

8 V

  1. Check for poor terminal contact at starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Check for a dirty or poor ground between the starter motor and the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Inspection .
  3. If OK, replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

  1. Disconnect the starter lead CKT 6 (PPL) from the starter solenoid.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Using a DMM, measure the voltage from the theft deterrent relay terminal A2 to ground.

Is the measured voltage greater than the specified value?

8 V

Repair the open or short to ground in CKT 6 (PPL).

Is the repair complete?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  2. Reconnect the starter lead CKT 6 (PPL) to the starter solenoid.
  3. Connect a DMM between battery positive voltage (B+) and the park/neutral position (PNP) switch connector C1 terminal G.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

10-15V

  1. Connect a DMM between the theft deterrent relay terminal C2 and ground.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the START position.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

  1. Remove the CRANK fuse from the IP fuse block.
  2. Connect a DMM between the CRANK fuse terminal C14 and ground.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the START position.

  1. Inspect the theft deterrent relay socket for poor terminal contact.

  1. Connect a DMM between battery positive voltage (B+) and the PNP switch connector C1 terminal E.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?
