Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the engine mount strut from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to Vehicle Support in General Information.
  4. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the manifold. Refer to Exhaust Pipe in Exhaust System
  5. Remove the right front tire. Remove the right front wheel. Refer to Front Wheel Replacement in Tires and Wheels
  6. Remove the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender Splash Shield in Body Front End.
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8. Remove the oil filter.
  9. Remove the oil cooler pipes. Leave the pipes loose in order to access the pipes. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement.
  10. Remove the engine mount lower nuts from the frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
  11. Remove the flywheel cover. Refer to Flywheel Cover Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  12. Use a transmission jack in order to raise the engine at the transaxle.
  13. Notice: Remove the oil level sensor, located in the oil pan, before the oil pan is removed. The sensor may be damaged if the oil pan is removed first.

  14. Remove the oil level sensor.
  15. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts.
  16. Lower the oil pan.
  17. Disconnect the oil pump screen.
  18. Remove the oil pan.
  19. Remove the oil pump screen.
  20. Clean the following parts:
  21. • The oil pan flanges
    • The oil pan rail
    • The front cover
    • The rear main bearing cap
    • The threaded holes

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply a continuous bead 6.35 mm (0.25 in) thick of RTV sealer GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) to the topside of the new gasket. Apply the RTV sealant directly over the gaskets sealing bead.
  2. Install the NEW oil pan gasket onto the engine.

  4. Apply a continuous bead 6.35 mm (0.25 in) thick of RTV sealer GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) to the bottom side of the new gasket. Apply the RTV sealant directly over the gaskets sealing bead.

  5. Object Number: 35860  Size: SH
  6. Install the baffle.
  7. Install the oil pan with the oil pump screen, to the engine.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the oil pump screen.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pump screen bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  11. Install the oil pan.
  12. Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent to the oil pan bolt threads.
  13. Important: Do not overtighten bolts or damage to the oil pan may occur, resulting in an oil leak.

  14. Install the oil pan bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 14 N·m (125 lb in).

    Notice: Install the oil level sensor, located in the oil pan, after the oil pan is installed. The sensor may be damaged if the oil level sensor is installed first.

  16. Install the oil level sensor.
  17. Install the oil level sensor connector.
  18. Lower the engine.
  19. Install the transaxle converter cover.
  20. Install the engine mount lower nuts to the frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
  21. Install the oil cooler pipes. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement.
  22. Install the oil filter.
  23. Install the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  24. Install the right front tire. Install the right front wheel. Refer to Wheel Replacement in Tires and Wheels.
  25. Connect the front exhaust pipe to the manifold. Refer to Front Exhaust Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Install the engine mount strut to the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
  28. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil. Refer to Draining and Filling the Engine in General Information.
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30. Inspect for the proper fluid levels.
  31. Inspect for leaks.
