Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 35953 Engine Support Foot Modification
    • J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
    • J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
    • J 39505 Torque Wrench Adapter
  1. Remove the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  2. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  3. Remove the A/C compressor and set it aside. Refer to HVAC.
  4. Remove the right engine mount strut and air conditioning bracket from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  5. Remove the electric engine cooling fan. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  6. Install the J 28467-360 , the J 28467-90 , the J 35953 , and the J 36462 .
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  8. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  9. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  10. Drain the engine oil.

  12. Remove the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
  13. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  14. Suitably support the drivetrain and the front suspension frame with floor stands.
  15. Remove the transaxle mount frame side nuts from the drivetrain and suspension frame. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  16. Remove the engine mount frame side nuts from the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  17. Remove the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions and Underbody.
  18. Lower the drivetrain and the front suspension frame bolts.
  19. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  20. Remove the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  21. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  22. Remove the transaxle brace from the oil pan. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.

  24. Remove the oil pan side bolts.
  25. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts.
  26. Remove the oil pan.
  27. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  28. Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket surface.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 39505 Torque Wrench Adapter
    • J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 35953 Engine Support Foot Modification
    • J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
    • J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg

    Object Number: 61840  Size: SH
  1. Apply a small amount of sealer GM P/N 1234579 or equivalent on either side of the rear main bearing cap, where the seal surface on the cap meets the cylinder block.
  2. Install the oil pan gasket.

  3. Object Number: 54394  Size: SH
  4. Install the oil pan.
  5. Install the oil pan retaining bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the oil pan side bolts. Use the J 39505 .
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the transaxle brace to the oil pan. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  10. Install the starter motor. Refer to Cranking System.
  11. Install the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  12. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  13. Raise the drivetrain and the front suspension frame bolts.
  14. Install the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions and Underbody.
  15. Install the engine mount frame side nuts from the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  16. Install the transaxle mount frame side nuts from the drivetrain and suspension frame. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  17. Remove the floor stands from the drivetrain and the front suspension frame.
  18. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.

  20. Install the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
  21. Install the intermediate steering shaft bolt. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  22. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24. Remove the J 28467-360 , the J 28467-90 , the J 35953 , and the J 36462 .
  25. Install the electric engine cooling fan. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  26. Install the engine mount strut and Air Conditioning bracket to the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  27. Install the right engine mount strut to the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  28. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to HVAC.
  29. Install the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  30. Add engine oil.
