Makes 🢒 Pontiac 🢒 1997 🢒 Firebird 🢒 Engine 🢒 Engine Mechanical - 5.7L (LT1) 🢒 Camshaft Replacement

Removal Procedure
  1. Recover the air conditioning system. Refer to SECTION 1B.
  2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the valve rocker arms and the valve rocker pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement .

  4. Remove the bolt and the oil pump driveshaft.
  5. Remove the water pump. Refer to SECTION 6B.
  6. Remove the distributor. Refer to SECTION 6D4.
  7. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  8. Remove the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and WP Driveshaft Replace .
  9. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  10. Remove the radiator with the air conditioning condenser. Refer to SECTION 6B.
  11. Remove the air conditioning receiver and the dehydrator hose from the condenser.
  12. Remove the air conditioning compressor and the condenser hose from the condenser.
  13. Remove the air conditioning condenser support.

  14. Remove the camshaft retainer bolts and the camshaft retainer.

    15. Important: All of the camshaft journals are the same diameter. Use care when removing the camshaft in order to avoid damage to the bearings.

  15. Remove the camshaft as follows:
    16. 15.1. Install three 5/16-18 x 4.0 inch bolts in the camshaft bolt holes.
    15.2. Carefully rotate and pull the camshaft out of the bearings.
  16. Inspect the camshaft bearings for scratches, pits, or loose fit in the bores.
  17. Replace camshaft bearings as necessary. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Removal and Installation .

Installation Procedure
  1. When installing a new camshaft, coat the camshaft lobes with Molykote or the equivalent.
  2. When installing a new camshaft, replace all of the valve lifters in order to ensure the durability of the camshaft lobes and the lifter rollers.
  3. Lubricate all of the camshaft journals with the engine oil.

  4. Install the camshaft.
  5. Install the camshaft retainer and the camshaft retainer bolts.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  6. Install the air conditioning condenser support.
  7. Install the radiator with the air conditioning condenser. Refer to SECTION 6B.
  8. Install the air conditioning receiver and the dehydrator hose to the condenser.
  9. Install the air conditioning compressor and the condenser hose to the condenser.
  10. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and WP Driveshaft Replace .
  12. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  13. Install the distributor. Refer to SECTION 6D4.
  14. Install the water pump. Refer to SECTION 6B.

    15. Object Number: 11507 Size: SH
  15. Install the oil pump driveshaft and the bolt.

    16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  16. Install the valve rocker arms and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Replacement .
  17. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  18. Charge the air conditioning system. Refer to SECTION 1B.
