Preliminary procedures

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Heat Shield Replacement
  2. Remove the exhaust extension pipe. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Tighten
14 N·m (124 lb in)

Exhaust Manifold

Procedure

  1. Remove and discard the Exhaust manifold gasket.
  2. Clean any exhaust manifold gasket debris from the cylinder head and exhaust manifold.
  3. Tighten the Manifold nuts working from the center out.

Exhaust Manifold Replacement LE5

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 1523744 Size: SH
  1. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer (1).
  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector (2).

    3. Object Number: 1523743 Size: SH

    Note: The HO2S uses a permanently attached pigtail and connector. This pigtail should not be removed from the sensor. Damage or removal of the pigtail or connector will affect proper operation of the sensor.

  3. Remove the HO2S. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 Replacement.

    4. Object Number: 1578492 Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the fuel line clip from the bracket.
  5. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  6. Remove the heat shield.

    7. Object Number: 1578491 Size: SH
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement.
  8. Remove the upper exhaust manifold brace bolt.

    9. Object Number: 1523747 Size: SH
  9. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold nuts.
  10. Remove the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter assembly.
  11. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1523747 Size: SH
  1. Install a NEW exhaust manifold gasket on the cylinder head.
  2. Install the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter assembly.
  3. Install the NEW exhaust manifold nuts finger tight.

    4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1578491 Size: SH
  4. Install the upper exhaust manifold brace bolt.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 1340643 Size: SH
  5. Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts in the sequence shown.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  6. Install the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement.

    7. Object Number: 1578492 Size: SH
  7. Install the heat shield.
  8. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.

    9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  9. Connect the fuel line clip to the bracket.

    10. Object Number: 1523743 Size: SH
  10. Install the HO2S. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 Replacement.

    11. Object Number: 1523744 Size: SH
  11. Connect the HO2S electrical connector (2).
  12. Install the CPA retainer (1).
  13. Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks.
