Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the case side cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement .
  2. Remove the oil pump. Refer to Oil Pump Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 164791  Size: MH
  4. Remove the valve body bolts.

  5. Object Number: 10511  Size: SH
  6. Remove the valve body while keeping the spacer plate with the transaxle.

  7. Object Number: 12993  Size: SH
  8. Remove the ball check valves from the valve body.

  9. Object Number: 12991  Size: SH
  10. Remove the spacer plate and gasket.

  11. Object Number: 10513  Size: SH
  12. Remove the ball check valves from the case cover.

  13. Object Number: 12988  Size: SH
  14. Inspect each check valve seat for excessive peening. Place a ball check valve on each seat and use a flashlight in order to look for visible light between the valve and the seat.
  15. Inspect all components removed from the transaxle. Refer to the Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case Unit Repair Manual.

Installation Procedure

Tool Required

J 36850 TRANSJEL™

    Notice: Do NOT use any type of grease to retain parts during the assembly of this unit. Using greases other than the recommended assembly lube changes the transaxle fluid characteristics. Using greases other than the recommended assembly lube causes undesirable shift conditions and/or filter clogging. Use TRANSJEL™ J 36850 or equivalent during the assembly of this unit.

  1. Install the ball check valves into the case cover. Use the J 36850 to retain the ball check valves in their proper locations.

  2. Object Number: 12991  Size: SH
  3. Install the spacer plate and the gasket.

  4. Object Number: 12993  Size: SH
  5. Install the ball check valves into the valve body. Use the J 36850 to retain the ball check valves in their proper locations.

  6. Object Number: 10511  Size: SH

    Important: Do NOT use impact type tools on the valve body or on the oil pump.

  7. Install the valve body and the gasket.

  8. Object Number: 164791  Size: MH
  9. Install the body bolts.
  10. Tighten

        • Tighten the M6 bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in). Refer to

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    in General Information.
        • Tighten the M8 bolt to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Important: Do NOT use impact type tools on the valve body or on the oil pump.

  11. Install the oil pump. Refer to Oil Pump Replacement .
  12. Install the case side cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement .
