Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement AT PNP Switch

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.

1. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls -- 3.1L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls -- 3.8L.
2. Remove the range selector cable for the automatic transaxle (AT) from the wiring harness clip or strap.



3. Remove the AT range selector cable from the AT range selector lever.



4. Remove the AT range selector cable from the AT range selector cable bracket.
5. Remove the AT range selector cable from the console shift control or the column shift control. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .
6. Pull the AT range selector cable through the dash from the engine compartment side.

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.

1. Insert the AT range selector cable through the dash from the engine compartment side.



2. Install the AT range selector cable to the AT range selector cable bracket.



3. Install the AT range selector cable to the AT range selector lever.
4. Install the AT range selector cable to the wiring harness clip or strap.
5. Install the AT range selector cable to the console shift control or the column shift control. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .
6. Adjust the AT range selector cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement and Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
7. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls -- 3.1L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls -- 3.8L.

Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement AT Console Shift Control

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.




1. Remove the range selector cable for the automatic transaxle (AT) from the wiring harness clips or retainers in the engine compartment.
2. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument panel, Gages and Console.
3. Pull the carpet back to expose the AT range selector cable. Refer to Front Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in Interior Trim.
4. Remove the AT range selector cable from the retaining clips or the retainers in the passenger compartment.



5. Disengage the AT range selector cable retainer to the console shift control.



6. Remove the AT range selector cable retainer from the console shift control.



7. Remove the AT range selector cable from the console shift control.



8. Remove the AT range selector cable through the hole in the cowl.
9. Remove the AT range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.




1. Properly route and position the AT range selector cable.



2. Install the AT range selector cable through the hole in the cowl.
3. Install the AT range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .



4. Install the AT range selector cable through the console shift control bracket.



5. Install the AT range selector cable to the console shift control.



6. Engage the AT range selector cable retainer to the console shift control.
7. Install the AT range selector cable to the retaining clips or the retainers in the passenger compartment.
8. Install the carpet into position. Refer to Front Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in Interior Trim.
9. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument panel, Gages and Console.



10. Install the AT range selector cable to the wiring harness clips or the retainers in the engine compartment.
11. Adjust the AT range selector cable. Refer to the following procedures:

Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement AT Column Shift Control

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.

1. Remove the range selector cable retainer for the automatic transaxle (AT) from the stud in the engine compartment.
2. Remove the steering column filler panel. Refer to Steering Column Opening Filler Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.



3. Remove the AT range selector cable from the shift control lever.
4. Remove the AT range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .



5. Remove the AT range selector cable through the hole in the dash.

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.




1. Install the AT range selector cable through the hole in the dash.



2. Properly route and position the AT range selector cable.
3. Install the AT range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .



4. Install the AT range selector cable to the shift control lever.
5. Install the steering column filler panel. Refer to Steering Column Opening Filler Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.



6. Install the AT range selector cable retainer to the stud in the engine compartment.
7. Adjust the transaxle side AT range selector cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .

Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement New Cable Installation

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.

1. Set the parking brake.
2. Block the wheels.
3. Place the transaxle in the Neutral position.
4. Place the shift control in the Neutral position.
5. Connect each cable section to the following components before connecting the two cable sections to each other:

•	The AT range selector lever and shift cable bracket

•	The column or the console shift control and retainer or the wiring harness clip




6. Insert the metal end fitting of the shift control cable into the transaxle cable end.
7. With the molded end fittings, push the metal end fitting of the shift control cable into the transaxle cable end until the metal post snaps into place.
8. Depress the adjuster clip once. This mobilizes the adjuster housing toward the transaxle end fitting.
9. Line up the end fittings so they slide together until you feel the parts cam together and lock.



10. Depress the adjuster clip completely. This locks the cable into its adjusted service position.
11. Pull the conduit in the opposite direction in order to assure full system adjustment of the shift cable.




Important: The horseshoe clip with the tab is flush when fully engaged.

12. Fully engage the conduit.



13. The horseshoe clip with the tab is not flush when not fully engaged.
14. Install the shift cable retainer and the wiring harness clip or the wiring harness strap.
