Adjust the radio balance and fade to the suspect speaker.

Do the speakers operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Are all of the speakers inoperative?

Go to Step 7

  1. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  2. Use an appropriate jumper to momentarily touch a 1.5 volt battery between the appropriate speaker circuits.

Does the speaker emit an audible pop?

Go to Step 8

Test the speaker output circuits of the suspect speaker for an open, or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 11

Inspect for poor connections at the speaker. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test all speaker circuits for a short to B+ or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the battery positive voltage circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Test the ground circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Test the radio on signal circuit for an open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

  1. Using a DMM set to measure AC voltage, connect by backprobing the low frequency audio amplifier harness connector at the suspect circuit with reference to the right rear low level audio signal (-) circuit.
  2. Adjust the fade and balance controls to the center detent.
  3. Turn the radio volume at mid-range.
  4. Observe the AC voltage measured using the DMM.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

0.1-3 V AC

Repair an open or a short to ground in the suspect low level audio circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the suspect speaker output circuits for an open, or short to ground, or short to B+. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Test the suspect speaker for an open or poor connection. Refer to Circuit Testing and Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

If the suspect speaker is open, refer to Radio Front Speaker Replacement or Radio Front Side Door Speaker Replacement or Radio Rear Speaker Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Inspect for a poor connection at the radio harness connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems

If a poor connection is not found, service the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .

Inspect for a poor connection at the low frequency audio amplifier harness connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

If a poor connection is not found, service the low frequency audio amplifier. Refer to Radio Speaker Amplifier Replacement .

Is the repair complete?
