  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Turn the gear selector lever to the PARK position.
  3. Using a scan tool, read the gear selector position display.
  4. Compare the scan tool display to the Gear Selector Position table below.

Does the scan tool display match the table below for the PARK position?

Does the scan tool display HIGH for all of the inputs?

Compare the scan tool display in each gear select position to the Gear Selector Position table below.

Does the scan tool display match the Gear Selector Position table below for all of the combinations?

Does the scan tool display LOW for all inputs?

Inspect CKT 451 (BLK/WHT) for an open or high resistance.

Is the resistance within the specified range?

0-5 ohms

Repair open or high resistance in high resistance in CKT 451 (BLK/WHT). Refer to Repairing Damaged Wire Insulation in Wiring Systems.

Inspect the PARK/NEUTRAL position switch for proper operation.

Does the PARK/NEUTRAL position switch operate properly?

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

Inspect the suspect wire for an open or a short to ground.

Is the wiring OK?

  1. Move the gear selector lever from PARK (P) to DRIVE 4 (D).
  2. Repair the circuit corresponding to the input that does not change. Refer to Repairing Damaged Wire Insulation in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

Does the scan tool display HIGH for all of the inputs?

Inspect all of the gear selector position input circuits for a short to ground.

Is the wiring OK?
