Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.

    2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .

    4. Object Number: 32409 Size: SH
  4. Depressurize the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief in Engine Controls-3.8L.
  5. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling
  6. Remove the radiator hoses. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the inlet heater supply hose. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  8. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  9. Remove the power steering pump. Set the pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  10. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor.
  11. Remove the air flow duct.
  12. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle linkage.
  13. Disconnect the battery wire from the generator.
  14. Remove the fuel feed and return lines (1 and 2) from the fuel rail and the pressure regulator.
  15. Remove the brake booster hose from the engine vacuum connections.
  16. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  17. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  18. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the right manifold. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  19. Remove the wiring harness connectors from the following locations:
    20. • The MAT sensor
    • The throttle position sensor
    • The idle air control valve
    • The oxygen sensor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The power steering cutout switch
    • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • The low oil level sensor
  20. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Tie the compressor back away from the engine.
  21. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
  22. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65E.
  23. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  24. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65E.
  25. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  26. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  27. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  28. Remove the engine to transmission brackets.
  29. Remove the right lower transmission to engine bolts.
  30. Lower the vehicle.
  31. Remove the generator rear brace. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  32. Disconnect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
  33. Remove the cruise control stepper motor from the cowl and set aside. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement in Cruise Control.
  34. Install a floor jack under transmission pan with a block of wood on jack pad to protect transmission pan.
  35. Lift jack to support transmission.
  36. Install a engine lift chain to the engine lift brackets and attach to an engine lift device.
  37. Raise the engine slightly to take weight off the mounts.
  38. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  39. Remove the engine mount bracket.
  40. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
  41. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
  1. Lower the engine into the engine compartment.
  2. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
  3. Install the engine mount bracket.
  4. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  5. Install the cruise control stepper motor to the cowl. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement in Cruise Control.
  6. Connect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
  7. Install the generator rear brace. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  9. Install the right lower transmission to engine bolt.
  10. Install the engine to transmission bracket.
  11. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  12. Install the right engine splash shield.
  13. Install the right front tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65E.
  15. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65E.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Install the A/C compressor to the engine. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  19. Install the wiring harness connectors to the following locations:
    20. • The MAT sensor
    • The throttle position sensor
    • The idle air control valve
    • The oxygen sensor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The power steering cutout switch
    • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • The low oil level sensor
  20. Install the front engine splash shield.
  21. Connect the front exhaust pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the engine.

  24. Connect the fuel feed and return lines (1 and 2) to the fuel rail and the pressure regulator. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service and Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service in Engine Controls-3.8L.
  25. Connect the battery wire to the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  26. Connect the throttle cable. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls-3.8L.
  27. Connect the cruise control cable to the throttle body. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control.
  28. Install the air flow duct.
  29. Connect the air temperature sensor electrical connection.
  30. Install the power steering pump to the engine. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  31. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  32. Connect the heater hoses to the engine.
  33. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
  34. Fill the crankcase with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  35. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  36. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
  39. Perform the CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls-3.8L.
