Test Description

This procedure is for diagnosing problems with the OnStar® button assembly. The following numbers refer to the steps in the table.

  1. Determines if the OnStar® button assembly has the necessary keypad signal circuit.

  2. If the keypad signal is shorted to voltage then the OnStar® three button assembly has been damaged. The OnStar® three button assembly has to be replaced.

Are all the buttons inoperative?

Measure the voltage at the OnStar® keypad between keypad power circuit and the keypad signal circuit.

Does the voltage measure near the specified value?

3V

Test the keypad signal circuit for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the keypad signal circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the OnStar® Rearview Mirror. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the OnStar® Rearview Mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the VIU. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Replace the vehicle interface unit (VIU). Refer to OnStar Vehicle Interface Unit Replacement .
