Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in SIR.
- Insert J 42640
into the steering column access hole
in order to lock the steering column.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the intermediate
shaft lower pinch bolt.
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
- Remove the knee bolster (1). Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages and
Console.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
.
- Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors .
- Lower the vehicle.
Important: Stabilize the studs in order to remove the nuts securing the steering
column to the instrument panel.
- Support the steering column.
- Position a 13-mm crowfoot
wrench onto one of the nuts which secures the steering column to the I/P.
- While holding the stud in position with a #7 inverted TORX®
socket, remove the nut.
- Repeat the above steps for each nut.
- Remove the steering column.
- Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
Installation Procedure
- Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the upper pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the steering column to the vehicle.
- Install the mounting nuts (1)
from the steering column to instrument panel.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Connect the steering column electrical connectors .
- If equipped install the transmission shift cable.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
.
- Install the knee bolster (1). Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages and
Console.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Install the intermediate
shaft to the power steering gear.
- Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove J 42640
from the steering column.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
Steering Column Replacement Column Shift

- Disable the SIR system. Refer to

- Insert J 42640
into the steering column access hole
in order to lock the steering column.

- Remove the intermediate

- Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the knee bolster (1). Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages and
Console.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
.
- Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors .
- Disconnect the transmission
shift cable from the linear shift assembly.
- Remove the clip from the
transmission shift cable.
- Remove the transmission
shift cable (2). Squeeze the tabs (1) together and pull the
transmission shift cable from the bracket.
Important: Stabilize the studs in order to remove the nuts securing the steering
column to the instrument panel.
- Support the steering column.
- Position a 13-mm crowfoot
wrench onto one of the nuts which secures the steering column to the I/P.

Tighten the i bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the steering column to the vehicle.
- Install the mounting nuts (1)
from the steering column to the instrument panel.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Connect the steering column electrical connectors .
- Install the transmission
shift cable (2) to the steering column bracket.
- Install the clip into
the tabs of the transmission shift cable.
- Install the transmission
shift cable to the linear shift assembly.
- Install the knee bolster (1). Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages and
Console.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Install the intermediate
shaft to the power steering gear.
- Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove J 42640
from the steering column.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
