Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the ignition battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  5. Position the steering wheel half way between the upper and lower tilt stops, if necessary.
  6. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  7. If equipped remove the manual tilt lever.

  9. Remove the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws (4).
  10. Disconnect the closeout shroud from the lower steering column trim cover.

  11. Object Number: 588304  Size: SH
  12. Remove the retaining screw (2) from the upper steering column trim cover.

  13. Object Number: 375310  Size: SH
  14. Lift the upper steering column trim cover to gain access to the lock cylinder access hole.

  15. Object Number: 375316  Size: SH
  16. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the START position.
  17. Using the bent tip awl, push down on the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin.
  18. Release the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.

  20. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the lock module.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the ignition lock cylinder to the lock module assembly by doing the following:
  2. 1.1. Align the positioning slot and locking tab slot on the lock module assembly to the positioning tab and locking tab on the ignition lock cylinder.
    1.2. Push the ignition lock cylinder into the lock module assembly until the locking tab locks against the locking tab.

  3. Install the upper steering column trim cover (1) to the steering column.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the upper steering column trim cover retaining screw (2).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  7. Connect the lower steering column trim cover (2) to the closeout shroud.
  8. Install the lower steering column trim cover retaining screw (4).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  11. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  12. Connect the ignition battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
